The month of February has come to an end with the successful completion of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. The city of Vancouver transformed into a welcoming stage for the world to enter and athletes to compete in. The days after this extraveganet event may not compare to the weeks before but the memories will blaze brightly ahead.
The first week of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics is officially over and the excitement is just growing! From all over the world, thousands of people have flooded into Vancouver for the first week of sporting events. The entire downtown area of Vancouver has been transformed into the likes of an Olympic Host City, with flags and Olympic rings everywhere!
Citizen journalism is nothing new to our world of available technology. It has become second nature for people to capture their experience, events or news in their environments on their phones, cameras or computers. We live in a world were journalism is an action and all of citizens have stepped forth into that call to action.
Vancouver is filled with energy now that 2010 Winter Olympic Games has officially started. The last week has been filled with the excited fervor of the last month and anticipation of the upcoming weeks. Here is a photographic look into the last week of adventure and celebrations, before the officially opening of the Games in Vancouver.
The 2010 Winter Olympic Games are upon us and things are heating up around Vancouver. You can feel the energy in the city as all the last minute details are pulled together for this huge event. The team at Static Photography has been out and about making photos of all the action and we have pulled together some of our favorites. The 2010 Cultural Olympiad kicked off its 60 days of curated arts, music, and theatre events for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics this past weekend in the city. One of the shows that was brought to Vancouver for the Cultural Olympiad was Elizabeth Streb's dance theater piece titled STREB: RAW. Elizabeth Streb is a performer and choreographer who focuses on human movement that flirts with risk. STREB: RAW is a performance piece that pushes the boundaries of human capabilities and challenges extreme human ability to attain flight.
This past year has been a really great experience for Static Photography. In the past twelve months there has been many trips, many photos and many events. Our photographer Kris Krüg and our studio manager Danielle Sipple have travelled all over the world, to Shanghai shooting photos for the book Chinameme Vol. 1 Shanghai, China with Christine Lu, to Austin, TX covering SXSW 2009 , to NYC shooting NYFW 2009, to Copenhagen, Denmark shooting photos during the United Nations Climate Change Conference and to Camden, ME shooting Pop!Tech 2009 to name just a few.
TED took Vancouver by storm when the firt ever TEDx Vancouver was organized and held on Saturday November 21st at EA Video Games in Burnaby. This one day conference was full of speakers, videos of TED talks and musicians that followed the main idea of 'Ideas Worth Spreading'. TED is a series of conferences that are centrally focused on technology, enterainment and design. Held all over the world, TED is often synonymous with inspiring ideas, motivating ancedotes and informational sessions that propel the audience into the future.
At Static Photography it is always exciting when we get the opportunity to shoot a live concert event. Usually a line-up includes one or two really awesome bands (unless it is the SXSW Music Festival !) but sometimes special events when stellar line-ups occur. Such was the Blazed and Confused tour that just came through Vancouver. This prolific tour included the musical acts of Beardo , Mickey Avalon , Slightly Stoopid and Snoop Dogg . Each of these acts in a solo performance would have been amazing, so to have them all on stage for one night was truly a sight. Stephen Marley was on the original tour line-up but was unable to make the Vancouver stop. :(
So Static Photography has been very busy since we got back from Shanghai, China. We were in Shanghai for two weeks with a schedule booked very full! Kris was shooting photos for his book Chinameme Vol. 1 Shanghai which he is co-authoring with Christine Lu. While in China Kris also spoke at TEDxShanghai and attended BarcampShanghai , which he helped start back in 2006. We also attended Shanghai's and China's first ever Gay Pride Celebration , a Ghostface Killah concert that was promoted by Splitworks Production as well as a few other events. We met new friends, shots hundreds of photos and explored many parts of the 25 million person city, under the burgeoning heat of Shanghai's summer.

They are able to fulfill specialty talent niches in major markets such as Toronto, Vancouver, New York, LA, Paris and Asia.
It was very exciting for Static Photography to announce last year around this time of Judy Inc. planned expansion over to the West Coast. The most exciting part of this announcement was the Vancouver representation of Kris as one of two location scouts for the talent agency. Kris is able to resource his extensive network of relationships and knowledge of awesome photography locations which makes him an very valuable and insightful location scout.
Since Vancouver was announced the host city for the 2010 Winter Olympics , many initiatives have sprung up around the local arts community to help foster strength and sufficient voice during the time leading up, during and after the Games.
One of this initiatives is called 2010 Legacies Now which promotes a strengthening lifeline to the affluent arts , literacy , sports/recreation and volunteerism in Vancouver for the upcoming 2010 event.
Vancouver has some really amazing events that happen yearly. One of them is the DOXA Documentary Film Festival , presented by the Documentary Media Society . Every year the DMS rallies together some of the best independent documentaries of the year from filmmakers all around the world and presents them to a local audience with an impressive curated schedule . The entire festival is juried and has additional elements of artist talks , public forums and special events.
The Purple Thistle is an awesome space designed for and by unschooled youth in Vancouver. Ranging from 11-25 kids from all over come to the Thistle to create art, hold workshops, learn from mentors and discover the social nature of being involved in a collective.
Translated as the sound of conversation Pecha Kucha is the optimized vision of creative presentations. At every Pecha Kucha Night around the world, each presenter is allowed 20 images shown at 20 seconds a piece, with a grand total of 6 minutes and 40 seconds for their entire presentation. Having this time limit really keeps presentations down to just the good stuff.
This was the fifth time that Pecha Kucha has happened in Vancouver . Kris Krug was chosen with 11 other presenters to speak on varying topics. Krug's discussion was a visual handbook on open-sharing . He was positioned along side Rex Weyler 's photo presentation from the startup of Greenpeace , Dolly Hopkins ' discussion on her involvement with the Illuminaries Festival , and Shawna Cox 's documentary adventure with the desert races .
The entire night was a direct onslaught of intelligent creative individuals creating art and social change, all within the city limits of Vancouver. The entire sold out theatre was filled with creative individuals. Everyone left feeling very inspired or super intimidated!
The 6th installment of Pecha Kucha is scheduled for May 21, 2009 at the Park Theatre .

At Static Photography we not only shoot fashion photography (catalogs, lookbooks, editorial, runway, etc) and music photography (album art, publicity shots, live concerts, etc) but we also shoot headshots and portraits with for all sorts of people, projects, and companies.
Twice a year Jamal and his production team produce Vancouver Fashion Week . A week filled with fashion shows, after parties, and photography. Director of Photography for the weeks is Kris Krug of Static . He is there front and center for all the shows taking shots and making sure that the other photographers are organized and in place.

Static’s Kris Krug will be showing one his photographs at Vancouver's infamous Cheaper Show on Saturday the 21st. The Cheaper Show is an event that showcases 150 of the best emerging visual artists from Vancouver and all around the world. All of the 300+ pieces of artwork that is shown is on sale for $200. This is an excellent time for first time buyers or those who have a limited art budget.
This year the event is being held at the old Storyeum building on 142 Water Street and the theme is Unscene Artwork. The Show is from 7- Midnight and admission is free. Last year 1500 people showed up, if you want to avoid the line up you better come early.
In April Vancouver hosted its biannual Vancouver Fashion Week at Chapel Arts. Seasoned and emerging designers were given a chance to show from their Fall/Winter 2008 collections to an accepting audience of buyers, media, fashionistas, and photographers. Veteran Anna Sui brought in a packed house the first night with a stunning showing from her fall/winter line.
