New York Institute of Photography

I'm what you might call a perpetual student. I've never gone long without being enrolled in some class of some sort, whether that's to build on my degree or something completely unrelated, I just love the whole school thing. Engaging my brain. Learning from others. Cracking open textbooks. You get the point.

As you can imagine I was proper excited yesterday when the fed-ex man came to my door bearing a great big, brown box with the words New York Institute of Photography stamped on it.

NYIP offers, what seems like, a great correspondance photography program. You work at your own pace through the lessons they send. They include reading, watching tutorials on dvd and then practical application of what you've just learned. When you've finished one, you send in your work to be evaluated by an instructor and they send you feedback on your projects and shoots on audio cassette. I'm even excited at the old-school nature of that. I'm all reminiscent of my pen pal days and when we advanced to actually speaking to each other on cassette. We thought we were so cool. But I digress...

The NYIP has been around for nearly a century. Many highly-acclaimed, professional photographers got their start through them and though I can't be certain, I'd be willing to bet that I'm currently enrolled in the same program that my grandpa took his formal photography training in many, many moons ago.

If any of you have ever taken courses through NYIP, or you know of someone who has, I'd love to get feedback on what you thought of it, ways to get the most out of it, tips, tricks, general observations, etc. Feel free to leave me a comment and let me know.

I'll be updating you guys on what I'm learning as I work through it. Stay tuned.
Now, I'm off....I have some reading to do!

Your comment, "It's been a

Your comment, "It's been a month now and nothing" is exactly the beauty of NYIP for me. My life gets pretty busy and the thought of commiting to even a once a week class didn't work for me. But with NYIP I can work at my own pace as long as I've completed in 3 years which means that if you want to follow my progress....well, brace yourself, it's gonna take awhile.

I haven't even looked at my stuff in about 3 weeks which is why I've got nothing new to report on it. But don't worry, I'll get back into it soon. Very soon. And you guys will be at least the 16th to know. heh.

Hey Rhonda. Where's the

Hey Rhonda. Where's the follow up to this story? I stumbled upon your blog in my own search for information on the credibility of NYIP and was excited to follow you through the first few lessons to get an idea of whether or not it's for me. But, it's been a month now and nothing. How's it going? -)

I've only read through the

I've only read through the first two sections of it and already I think it's fantastic. I can see how it's useful for you to have, Roar, even though you haven't completed the course.

Also, thanks for the info regarding the colours. I know when we changed the colours of the site there were a few oversights - thanks for bringing these to our attention. We'll get on it....soon!

I started a norwegian

I started a norwegian edition of a NYIP course a long time ago. The package I received was impressive. Unfortunately I was not able to finish the program off back then. I still have all the materials and are looking at them once in a while.... thinking that maybe one day I'l get started again. When I signed up they actually promised me my money back if I was not able to make to cover the cost of the course by selling my shots.

PS: I had to switch from IE to Firefox to be able to see what I wrote in this box. In IE the default font colour (black) was used. Kind of hard to see on a black background. Same issue in Firefox for e-mail field (white on white)

That's awesome to hear! I'm

That's awesome to hear! I'm going into it sort of blind but from what I've read about it I couldn't really go wrong. I'm so happy to hear someone say good things about it though. I hope my experience goes just as well as hers!

A friend here is almost done

A friend here is almost done her certificate course through NYIP. She has said awesome things about it. I think now she has the option to add onto her program with a choice of courses and she's going to do that too. Good Luck Rhonda! I'm excited for you (especially about the new books...)
