Independent Media & Citizen Journalism at The 2012 Democratic National Convention - Charlotte, North Carolina

Bill Clinton gave a rousing speech on night two of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. At the end, to the surprise of the audience and media and, who knows maybe even Clinton himself, Obama came out and gave him a big hug.

The Democratic National Convention is taking place in Charlotte this week and there's a huge focus on independent media… especially blogging and citizen journalism. With convention delegates and the media armed with iPhones and using Instagram, Twitter, YouTube & Facebook this has election is more connected & real-time than any that has come before.

One particularly interesting project is an independent media center called #ThePPL. #ThePPL is a co-working and event space in Uptown Charlotte just blocks from the main events  and designed for the emerging and online media covering the #DNC2012. In addition to a newsroom supporting hundreds of indy journalists, activists, and non-profits the people has been hosting parties, guest speakers, and roundtable discussions throughout the convention.

From www.theppl.us… "We're just having fun doing what we love to do. Making art. Making media. Making history. #DNC2012 #ThePPL"

Midway Journey is a poetic, visual & introspective journey to one of the most remote places on the planet.

Journey to Midway Island

“I envision our project not as being a bunch of us tramping around the island with cameras; instead I hope it will be an emotional and spiritual journey by a deeply connected group of artists, to honor the issues that Midway represents.

Maybe it is not too ambitious to hope—if we can fully rise to the occasion—that we might be able to co-create a multi-media work of art that tenderly witnesses this middle point that humanity finds itself at right now.

And in the eye of the storm —the apex of the Gyre—perhaps our collaborative efforts can create a container for healing that might have some small effect on the collective choice that is to come.” - Photographer and artist Chris Jordan

One of the most vibrant areas of the city of Vancouver is its downtown core. Surrounded on two sides by magnificent waterfronts and topped by the greenery of Stanley Park, this downtown area is anything but a dead-zone buffered by the business of 9-5.

Jason Saunders @ IOC Flickr Party - Yaletown - Vancouver British Columbia IOC Flickr Party - Yaletown - Vancouver British Columbia IOC Flickr Party - Yaletown - Vancouver British Columbia

With major events like the Olympics, the media coverage can be almost as crazy and hectic as the actual event itself. Now that the internet and new media have a key role in the process, Olympic media coverage had a game face change in Vancouver this past year. No longer were just traditional media journalists and photographers showing up to all the events, but also bloggers, new media activists, new school photographers and everyone who had a camera on their phone. Whether it was from the official hashtag of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games (#van2010), to the IOC welcoming the Flickr community of Vancouver with open arms to the lightning flash news service that was Twitter during the month of February, Vancouver revolutionarily changed the way people watched and participated in the Olympic Games.
